A recent marriage ceremony in Kano State was marred by minor drama when the bride’s relative, who was assigned to give her hand in marriage (Waliyyi), was accused of taking her dowry just before the wedding.
The incident is said to have occurred in the Kurna region of Dala LGA in Kano State.
According to Daily Trust, the theft was detected after a search of individuals in the area, and the money was discovered inside the Waliyyi’s pocket.
In marriage negotiations, a ‘Waliyyi’ is a guy who represents the bride.
Sunusi Dan Mamman, a resident who witnessed the occurrence, stated that the dowry was discovered in the pocket of the Waliyyi, who claimed to have no knowledge of how the money was obtained.
“During the search, the money was found inside the pocket of the Waliyyi, who said he didn’t know how it got there.”
“After finding the money, the Waliyyi was chased out of the mosque as he could no longer stand as the bride’s representative. His younger brother was then assigned to take his place, and the wedding proceeded,” he said.
