Rita Edochie, a veteran Nollywood actress, has encouraged the Federal Government to free the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, if the turmoil in the South-East is to be resolved.
Nnamdi Kanu was detained for the first time on October 14, 2015, for his involvement in the separatist movement. He was granted release in April 2017, but was later remanded in detention pending his trial on terrorist charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja in 2021.
To put pressure on the Nigerian government in order to achieve Nnamdi Kanu’s release, the separatist group IPOB instituted a sit-at-home order every Monday across the South-east area.
Despite the fact that the order was later changed to only be respected on days when Mr. Kanu appears in court, many residents in the five South-east states (Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, and Anambra) continue to observe the Monday sit-at-home order out of dread.
The separatist group recently tightened the sit-at-home command, resulting in riots and acts of violence against people who disobeyed the directive.
In response to the turmoil, actress Rita Edochie resorted to Instagram to call on the federal government to release Nnamdi Kanu if they want the unrest to end.
Sharing a video of Kanu, she wrote,
“RELEASE MAZI NNAMDI OKWU KANU TODAY AND SEE THE UNREST IN THE SOUTH EAST BECOME A HISTORY.
STOP PLAYING WITH PEOPLES LIFE ESPECIALLY ALL YOU ELITES
THAT YOUR CHILDREN ARE OVERSEAS AND YOU ARE USING OTHER PEOPLE’S CHILDREN TO CREAT UNREST.
IF YOU ARE ONE OF THEM YOUR GENERATION AND GENERATION TO COME WILL NEVER NO PEACE”
