Dr. Kadiri Akeem, a lecturer at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), was detained by the Lagos State Police Command for reportedly raping a 20-year-old female undergraduate student.
The claimed victim, whose identity was not revealed, accused Dr. Kadiri, an Associate Professor of Botany, of sexually defiling her during a visit to his office to discuss her results.
The event occurred on August 16, 2023, according to the victim who reported him to an NGO called the Inclusive Social Welfare and Empowerment Foundation.
The NGO then reported the issue to the state Police Command’s Gender Unit, triggering action from the Commissioner of Police, CP Idowu Owohunwa. The state High Court then issued an arrest warrant for Dr. Kadiri through the OC Gender.
The university’s Vice Chancellor was given a seven-day deadline to bring Dr. Babalola for questioning. When questioned, the instructor allegedly admitted to the crime.
When the Vice Chancellor learned of this confession, he immediately alerted the police via the school’s Chief Security Officer, which resulted in Dr. Babalola’s imprisonment.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, a spokesperson for the state Police Command, confirmed the arrest and added that the culprit would be charged in court soon.
“He is to appear in court in the coming days,” the PPRO added.
