NFF no longer owing Super Falcons – NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially certified that there are no longer any overdue payments owed to the Super Falcons, the senior female football team.

The NFF’s President, Ibrahim Gusau, made the declaration on Thursday, August 24th, following a summons to testify before the House ad-hoc committee.

The NFF has already resolved the match bonuses and allowances owed to the Super Falcons, and these payments were disbursed the previous Friday, according to the committee session.

In response to questions from the ad hoc committee’s chairperson, Blessing Oni, over unpaid allowances for the Super Falcons during the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Gusau emphasized that no monies were granted for that occasion. He did, however, reveal that a total of $960,000 was dispersed to all 32 qualifying countries for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Gusau went on to explain that the FIFA financial allocation was intended for the preparation of the participating teams for the forthcoming World Cup and could not be used to settle overdue allowances from the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

When asked about finance for the Super Falcons’ participation in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, Onu, the Chairperson of the House ad hoc committee, voiced unhappiness with the NFF’s reply. As a result, she directed the NFF to deliver evidence explaining how the Super Falcons were financed during the 2019 tournament by August 30, 2023, including a breakdown of match bonus payments for the 23 players and coaching staff.

Based on the findings of the ad hoc committee’s study into the NFF’s financial sources, the NFF’s President explained that their principal funding is normally provided by both CAF and FIFA.

Furthermore, the NFF stated that the Federal Government does not cover its operational costs. Instead, the federation relies on funding from FIFA to cover these costs.
