A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck central Morocco, killing at least 1,037 people and injuring many more.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake’s epicenter occurred in the High Atlas Mountains, 71 kilometers (44 miles) southwest of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5 kilometers.

According to BBC news, this seismic event happened at 23:11 local time (22:11 GMT) on Friday, September 8, and was followed by a 4.9 magnitude aftershock 19 minutes later.
The quake caused strong vibrations in the coastal cities of Rabat, Casablanca, and Essaouira.
Morocco’s interior ministry confirmed casualties in Marrakesh and nearby areas, notably in isolated places, in a statement.
The earthquake killed people in several provinces and towns, including al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua, and Taroudant, and injured over 1,200 people.
There have also been reports of families trapped beneath the wreckage of their homes throughout the city, as well as structural damage to parts of the Medina.
This is the most violent earthquake to ever strike the country, and one analyst dubbed it the “biggest in more than 120 years” in the region.
